We started a new year of reading
Last week at the BookNook Center we started the Literacy Corner preschool reading program. I designed the program to bring the love of reading books to the preschool children in the community. We start at the letter "Aa" and go all the way to "Zz". During the sessions we have a great time talking about the stories, learning about the letters and creating crafts referring to the Letter of the Week.
Let's start at the very bginning. We reviewed the letter Aa. In print and in images. Not too many of the children knew what an Apron was but after a little explaining we all got it.
It ws even more impressive when the young children spelled the letters in the images. Yes, we had "ant", Alligator", "apron" and of course "apple".
Last week books theme was "ABC". We read 4-5 books per session. I usually let each child pick a book if we have time we get to read them all. A favorite this week was "Hey, Little Ant" and "Miss Spider's ABC" book. We had a pile of 10 books sitting in our circle. Each child mused through the books and listened to the stories.
This past week Literacy Tip - Print Awareness.
Print awareness is a child's earliest understanding that written language carries meaning. The foundation of all other literacy learning builds upon this knowledge.
Children who have an awareness of print understand that the squiggly lines on a page represent spoken language. They understand that when adults read a book, what they say is linked to the words on the page, rather than to the pictures. [readingrockets.com]
